Device updates with TISLOG MDM
Process Optimization
Control and automate updates for your mobile device pool with TISLOG Mobile Device Management (MDM)
Bocholt, September 9, 2020
Regardless of whether it is a truck fleet with digital data acquisition or a large warehouse with hundreds of hand scanners in use, regular updates of the operating system are a necessary part of working with mobile technology in order to ensure the smooth functionality of the devices.
Planning is an important part of this because the updates must be performed at the appropriate times. This is the only way to avoid interruptions in processes on the move and in the warehouse. At the same time, this ensures that updates are actually carried out.
In addition to the right time, the general availability of a corresponding Internet connection for downloading the data packages also plays a role. But even with a suitable connection, availability problems can occur if too many devices download updates at the same time in an uncontrolled manner. In addition, manufacturers provide their updates in different ways, which sometimes requires several steps during installation.
The mobile device management from TIS relieves you at all points. Our tool takes over control and automatic execution of the updates and thus integrates the maintenance work seamlessly into your logistics processes.
Specify your settings individually, TISLOG MDM does the rest
From the operating system version Android 6, our Mobile Device Management can automate operating system updates for a number of devices from our TISWARE hardware portfolio (e.g. Zebra, Honeywell, Panasonic and Datalogic) in addition to many other steps.
After an initial check of your device pool for automatic update capability, our experts make some basic settings that are adapted to your situation, for example to ensure that software or data that is still required is not accidentally overwritten in the event of an update. You can then conveniently configure your mobile device management yourself in the configuration manager of our Infodesk web portal according to your wishes.
If a manufacturer issues a new update, this is first checked by our support and then made available on the TISLOG central server for retrieval "on demand".
If an operating system update is then initiated for one or more of your devices in your Infodesk portal, the update packages suitable for these devices are available.
TISLOG MDM can now be used, for example, to define the conditions (e.g. WiFi must be available) under which an update should first be automatically downloaded and when it should actually be carried out. A subdivision sorted by different device groups (hall, long-distance traffic, local traffic) and the definition of different update times for each individual group is possible.
Secure from interruptions and data loss through updates at the right time
A decisive advantage of TIS Mobile Device Management is the comprehensive definability of dependencies so that the update process can actually be started at the right time.
In day-to-day business, delays with several stops and a lot of traffic can sometimes delay a tour. As a result, an automatically scheduled operating system update could, for example, collide with the work of a driver who is just in the middle of processing his last trip.
For this reason, TISLOG MDM not only allows you to specify pure update times. In order to ensure that the automated installation does not interrupt processes, the execution of an update can also be linked to certain conditions. For example, you can specify that the installation should only be carried out on the device after the end of the tour or after the employee has logged off.
Depending on how the manufacturer provides an operating system update, several steps may be necessary. A very large full update may be due first and then another so-called delta update (incremental update) with a slightly smaller amount of data.
TISLOG MDM is able to carry out such double update steps automatically one after the other without the need for manual intervention.
The Mobile Device Management also checks whether the respective device is supplied with sufficient power via battery or power supply at the time of the update so that the update can take place completely. If a device does not have sufficient power supply at the planned time, for example because the battery has to be recharged first, the update only starts once the battery has reached a corresponding charge level again.
Advantages of mobile device management for operating system updates
Each update is checked in advance by TIS support. Only checked updates are fed centrally into the system for your devices
Automated checking of the previously defined conditions and subsequent automatic execution of the updates by TISLOG MDM
Central management of all updates for all devices possible
Seamless integration of the MDM configuration into the Infodesk config manager of the TISLOG system
Different settings are possible sorted by device groups, e.g. differentiation between indoor equipment, long-distance traffic, local traffic
Transmission conditions adjustable (only WLAN or also WWAN)
Automatic load distribution when many devices are present to relieve the infrastructure (only x devices are operated at the same time)
