Machine Learning Tool | Use in TISLOG

Bocholt, January 22, 2025

Artificial intelligence is becoming more and more important these days and more and more companies are relying on AI for a variety of reasons.
We at TIS GmbH have been working with artificial intelligence for almost ten years and we are looking at how we can use it to further improve our TISLOG logistics software. Most recently, one of our employees wrote his master's thesis on machine learning, which is a specific area of AI.

What was the master’s thesis about?
In the master's thesis, a machine learning tool was developed that enables the monitoring of software operations. Mechanisms have also been implemented that ensure continuous improvement of the machine learning algorithms based on new data, so that the algorithm automatically reacts to changes.

What is the tool used for?
The tool is integrated into the TISLOG server and is used to detect unusual behavior at an early stage and thus prevent minor problems from escalating into major disruptions.
It is currently used to analyze database queries from the TISLOG Cloud instances. The machine learning algorithm examines, for example, how frequently certain database queries occur or how long they take. If this deviates from normal behavior, the software development is alerted so that they can solve a possible problem at an early stage. The system “learns” the normal state and can therefore quickly adjust to new standard states after software updates.

What advantage does the developed machine learning tool bring?
The machine learning tool developed in the master's thesis has the advantage that problems can be identified more quickly. This allows the TIS team to react more quickly and either completely avoid major disruptions or resolve them more quickly. For the customer, this means a smoother work process with fewer disruptions. Ideally, the disruptions are resolved before they even develop into actual disruptions.

Who wrote the master's thesis?
The master's thesis was written last year by Nico Gaelings, who studied at the Westphalian University and also worked as a working student at TIS GmbH. He passed his master's thesis with a grade of 1.0. Since September 1st, Nico has been working full-time in our software development and is successfully applying the skills he learned during his studies.
