Geofences in Logistics

Various possibilities with geofences in your logistics

TISLOG Logistiksoftware | Geofencing

Bocholt, May 26, 2020

The term geofencing* refers to a technology that uses GPS coordinates to draw a virtual border in space and to trigger certain actions based on this border.
TIS integrated geofencing in the TISLOG logistics software in 2015 and continuously expanded it further since.

Today, we will show you a few examples of how you can automate and optimize logistic processes with geofencing.

Benefits of using geofencing at a glance

  • Automatic arrival and departure time determination
  • Automatic stop processing
  • More transparent processes
  • Avoidance of errors
  • Controlling in "real time"
  • Automatic alarms and transfer from the point of deviations from the planned numbers

The depot for general cargo as a geofence

Local trucks drive towards their delivery areas in the morning, work through the delivery and pick-up tour and then return to the depot. Each tour has a tour start and a tour end. These times are important for monitoring the planned tour times. A late tour start can jeopardize set appointments. A late return may cause problems with reloading into the main runs. A geofence that depicts the outline of the depot can now automatically set the tour start without the driver having to do anything. If there is a difference between planning and reality, an alarm is triggered.
A well-designed second geofence as a circle or polygon placed at a certain distance reports the expected arrival time of local transport trucks at the depot an hour beforehand.
A geofence is also useful for the "Yard Check" function in the TISLOG logistics software. The app can then automatically assign the correct depot.

The customer as a geofence

Geofences can be automatically generated at pick-up or delivery addresses as soon as the data arrives in the TISLOG office web portal. These geofences can be used to automatically set the arrival and departure status in a tour. An additional condition (such as length of stay> x minutes) can trigger an alarm for the dispatcher if it is exceeded.

Another example: You have a larger order in which a truck constantly “commutes” between the loading and unloading points, such as in silo transport, bulk goods or for deliveries to construction sites. Here it may be important for billing to determine the number of tours. With geofencing you can fully automate this.
The driver does not have to do anything!

Process control through geofences

For example, you can configure that the activation of certain menu buttons on the mobile device is only possible within a certain geofence. This way, you could control that a delivery status can only be set once the truck has reached the customer and not on the way.

Pallet dealer as geofence

You can create familiar pallet dealers as geofence. If one of your truck drivers approaches these pallet dealers, you will be informed and can check whether it is a legitimate order.

Virtual speed camera / radar control in the yard

Are there speed limits at your forwarding yard or at one of your customers that you would like to monitor? Then create a suitable geofence with the appropriate maximum speed for speed monitoring. As soon as a driver exceeds the limit you have set, you will be informed automatically.

Basic settings and automatic alarms to all systems

Geofences can be assigned via vehicles, fleets and branches. In this way you can set that alarms are only triggered for certain vehicles.
Geofence alarms can be easily transmitted to connected systems via our TISLOG data hub. In addition to a TMS system, subcontractor systems, accounting systems or BI tools could also be "fed" with the information.
