3G shutdown in Germany - time frame and effects

Slowly but surely, the 3G network in Germany has seen its best days. With the expansion of 4G and 5G networks, which enable significantly faster data transmission, 3G is used less and less. For this reason, three major network providers in Germany will switch off 3G this year. Older generations of mobile devices for mobile order management will also be affected by this shutdown. In this article, you will also find out today which hardware that was previously available through our portfolio is impacted by the 3G shutdown.
Which network providers will shut down 3G and when?
The shutdown of the 3G network is handled differently by Telekom, Vodafone and Telefónica/ O2. Telekom and Vodafone will both shut down their 3G network for good on June 30, 2021 and will start with a gradual shutdown beforehand. Telefónica/ O2, on the other hand, will not shut down its 3G network for good until December 31, 2021, but will also begin a gradual shutdown beforehand.

2G network remains
The older 2G network, however, will remain accessible. This network is particularly suitable for telephony and sending SMS. But simple transfers of status data and signatures are also possible. Maintaining this network serves as security so that older cell phones can still be used. However, 2G is not designed for the transmission of many or large images or documents and switching to a newer device is strongly recommended.
